This map shows 20 years of all-time temperature records from the 100,000 approved weather stations in the NOAA GHCN-Daily database.

Each dot show the highest or lowest min or max temerature ever recorded at a station. Around 40,000 all-time records were set in the last two decades, out of 500 million daily min and max entires.

Slowing down time highlights expectional cold and hot spells. For example, the US west coast saw some biting temperature in 1998/89.

And some blistering heat in the summer of 2002.

Here's the 2003 European heatwave that killed tens of thousands of people.

And a flash of freezing conditions that hit Asia in early 2016.

Speeding the visual up and plotting the highs and lows per month shows the seasonal pattern. The bigger peaks reflect the northern hemisphere, which has more approved weather stations than the southern.

This endless oscillation between hot and cold makes it difficult to see and feel the climate change "singnal" amidst the weather "noise". But what happens if we count the highs and lows?

The whole multi-century dataset has an equal number of highs and lows. But in the last 20 years the highs outnumber the lows by almost 50%-a stark reflection of the rapid warming the planet has been experiencing.
